In their dissertation projects, the doctoral students of the Graduate Centre of Excellence analyse national and international labour market institutions from an economic as well as from a legal perspective. The first year of the programme, therefore, consists of substantial course work so as to equip the students in the early stage of their research with a profound knowledge of contemporary economic and econometric methods and of relevant legal theories and concepts. By focusing on contemporary economic research, these lectures, seminars and workshops also help students to sketch and define their own research projects. The majority of courses are held by external experts. In addition, students are encouraged to attend summer schools in Germany and abroad. In the second and third year students are expected to work on their individual research projects and to present and discuss their results in national and international conferences. The following list provides an overview of the course work offered to doctoral students during their first year.
